It was the 90s and my birthday and a couple of friends wanted to go to Catch a Rising Star. It was a normal night and watching a few comedians do their thing, but the last act was Eddie Murphy. My life was completed. (I still watch Delirious and Raw to this day). He was practicing his new material, and it was 3 hours of ad-libbing and pure genius.

Jerry and others have said that what makes Eddie different than most other comedians is that he's usually kinda Zen. He doesn't have the need to be on most of the time, even in interviews. Whereas most comedians will still try to be witty in most situations. But everyone KNOWS that Eddie can turn it on anytime and blow the roof of the sucker. Listen to his acceptance speech for the Mark Twain prize. Unrehearsed, off the cuff, and still completely owning the room.

Dave is the GOAT, because he can do it all. He can be a preacher, storyteller, and comedian, all in one, and he is unfiltered which today as a comedian is amazingly hard, and I'm not talking just about offensive jokes, I'm talking about addressing very serious manners in a variety of ways, this is what makes him the GOAT today in my opinion.

Bill Burr, Doug Stanhope, and a few others still get away with almost everything they say. Why? Skill. The put in the work to really understand how to get everyone to make the same sound at exactly the same moment (paraphrasing Norm MacDonald). The reason comedy has gotten repressed is equal parts outrage tribe culture AND lazy hack comedians.

That opening bit with Murphy and Seinfeld back stage couldn’t illustrate the differences in their stage style better. Seinfeld: “what’re going to eat later?” Murphy: “... eat?” Seinfeld: “you don’t eat at night?” Murphy: “... oh yeah, I eat.” Funniest line of this video because it’s just Eddie Murphy in that moment waiting to explode onto the stage, even if he’s chill. It’s the same ritual from when he was 18. Seinfeld knows exactly what he’s going to do, so he’s just thinking about what’s next... food. That’s the same ritual as when Seinfeld was starting out as a kid. Murphy is psyching up to own the stage and fuck up that “you ain’t nothin’!” guy. That mentality is what made him great live, on live TV, and in movies. Seinfeld’s got his set. He’ll tell some jokes, but getting the sandwich with the other guys at 2am is what he’s looking forward to. He couldn’t care less because there’s always the next set. Murphy is a boxer- he’s comfortable, but he’s never relaxed. Seinfeld is a designated hitter- anything over 500 is legendary, so just take some chops. For such funny guys with an obvious respect for one another, they’re so different. Awesome to see.

Honestly, observational comedy itself is ordinary. That’s the point of it. It’s finding why people accept crazy shit as perfectly fine. Murphy used vulgarity appropriately most of the time. The time he came up was different for black comedians and I think he played to that. Just Google “Milton Berle and Richard Pryor.” Then look at some of Murphy’s interviews on Carson. Even Johnny Carson changed with a black comedian in the guest chair. Murphy did go for any of that bullshit. Pryor for different ways to stand his ground, but he went along with it until he knew he had his shot. So, back to the boxing simile- Pryor was like Ali where Murphy took the stage like Tyson. There was no question WHO owned the room when Murphy did his sets. Murphy’s biggest fear? The heckler. Not only is he going to make the room laugh, but he’s going to let that dumb idiot in the crowd know “I’m going to fuck you up if you interrupt my set, bitch.” Don’t be fooled that the vulgarity in Murphy’s comedy is filler of lazy writing: he’s an awesome writer. Every. Single. Word. in his sets was exactly where it worked best. Seinfeld? He’s a designated hitter because he can’t be bothered to get up and swing away more than a few times a night. He looks at all the other guys sweat and get dirty, sprinting and sliding, running into walls and making diving catches, and he thinks “these poor bastards have no idea how to play this game.” That attitude is why his biggest fear is silence. Hecklers? Who cares. Nobody likes them, so I’ll probably make a fool out of them and move on. If not, fuck it: there’s always the next set. Am I feeling Rueben or turkey club? Seinfeld doesn’t sweat. He’s Edgar Martinez out there. He’s got it, he’s done his reps, he knows they’re going to eat it up... or at least most will. At least a few people will really love it. Okay, ONE guy will laugh his ass right out of his chair. Just don’t give me a dead room. Do they have Pop Tarts in England? I probably should have checked out a grocery store first. Nah... I’ll just tell my jokes and hope they get the references. I’ll make it work. I love that about Seinfeld just as much as I love being blown away by Eddie Murphy. They’re both great writers and amazing at working the room.

well said man, i agree 100%...seinfeld is so relaxed at all times and extremely quick witted.....its a shame more peeps dont appreciate him, given that he does clean comedy....i love 80s murphy stand up but honestly, if you take out the cussing....its very ordinary......i love murphy but imo seinfeld is the naturalyy funnier man.

Eddie is supremely content with life. He doesn't need the attention or ask himself probing questions - he is where he wants to be in life, and that's mostly outside of entertainment. Jerry still digs entertainment and dissecting its essence though he seems very content with life too. Interesting contrast.

With all his life experiences. I mean legendary, and iconic career. All Eddie would have to do is be himself and share some stories. Eddie is already on Mount Rushmore. When he re-did those old SNL skits. That was great. In fact I think he was even better. Like the original was a raw style and the resent one was more refined almost like natural. I don't know how to explain exactly but I just thought he is even better than before. Just my humble opinion. That being said if he tries to be to be more political correct. That might not work for his caliber. He has to be raw for stand up . That's what sent him thru the stratosphere of comedy. He had like a Elvis/ Michael Jackson like entrance excitement . He's was like a Rockstar. And in many ways he still is.
